Nutrition is an issue that encompasses agriculture, health, infrastructure and education, and effort is required in all these sectors to solve the problem of malnutrition in Timor-Leste.

Understanding the importance of education in reducing malnutrition, Seeds of Life held an in-depth training on the basics of nutrition for staff and representatives from NGOs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, last Wednesday.

Over 70 participants attended the event, which was presented by the NGO HIAM Health, Assistant Professor of Nutrition and Nutrition Advisor to SoL, Dr Jessica Fanzo and Seeds of Life Training Officer, Alva Lim.

Topics covered included the current nutrition situation in Timor-Leste, the symptoms of malnutrition and nutrition in agriculture.

Fanzo believes these topics will be applicable to trainee’s jobs.

“They will be able to use the information received on crop nutrition directly in their work,” she said.

“Understanding the nutritional value of the crops and the varieties they are working with is very important. They asked a lot of questions and had very thoughtful comments, so their comprehension of the major issues on nutrition-sensitive agriculture is high.”
