Rice field just ready in some part of south west regions.

(Tetum)There have been more good rainfalls received across the mountains of Timor-Leste. The eastern and south west coastal regions received rain in early February but then the second week of February was dry again. This has saved some crops at risk along the coast as well as increased available food for livestock. These coastal areas will likely result in reduced crop production. Rice field preparation is generally delayed across the nation as farmers struggle to cope with intermittent rain and many irrigation systems are not yet delivering water.

Very poor condition of crops

(Tetum) Some good rains have fallen across Timor-Leste in the northern areas and in the mountains which has brought welcome relief to farmers. However, the south coast has received very little rain which has resulted in many areas experiencing crop failure. In other areas the crop is performing so poorly that farmers consider it not worthwhile to weed so the crop is neglected and further stressed. More animals have been dying along the south coast and in some areas along the north coast.  There are further delays in rice field preparation as farmers wait for enough rain to increase flow in the rivers.El Nino Crop Situation Report 20160131 El Nino TL-Update-January

There has been a continued period of patchy rainfall across Timor-Leste where some localised areas have received enough rain whereas other areas have received very little rain. Timor-Leste has received generally less than 50% rainfall compared to normal years in December and January is looking worse. Farmers are reporting more animals are losing condition and dying. An extra map has been included to indicate those areas where reports were received of sick and dying animals. This is due to animals losing condition due to lack of feed, eating feed of poor quality and reduced water supply. The dry weather has resulted in a delay in the preparation of rice fields in a number of areas which are shown on the rice (Hare) map. Some springs are still low or not flowing. A number of crops have died and some farmers are replanting if they get enough rain.

(Tetum) Seeds of Life (SoL) research showing that the average temperature in Timor-Leste has increased by 1°C and rainfall has dropped 19% since 1974 was presented at the 1st Climate Change Adaptation Conference in Dili this week.

The research finding that Timor-Leste is now hotter than in Portuguese times is based on an analysis of changes in temperature and rainfall between the periods 1954-1974 and 2004-2012. (more…)
