Gumboot donation makes for happy feet

(Tetum) It’s been a very rainy ‘dry season’, but many feet have stayed dry thanks to Hunter Boots’ donation of around 3,000 pairs of gumboots to farmers and extension staff.

Seeds of Life (SoL) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) distributed the Wellington boots in late 2012 to farmers in community seed producing groups, and MAF Extension Officers who work in the field with farmers. (more…)

(Tetum) Three farmer associations from Baucau and Liquisa districts are the first to be officially registered as Commercial Seed Producers under the National Seed System for Released Varieties (NSSRV).

The associations received their registration certificates from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) in mid-July. This permits them to produce and sell commercial seed in accordance with MAF’s Guidelines and, subject to spot checks by MAF Seed Department, sell it as “truthfully labeled” commercial seed to other farmers, NGOs, commercial seed traders and the Timor-Leste Government. Covalima district farmers have more access to seed

(Tetum) Farmers in Covalima now have more access to improved varieties of seeds following the launch of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries’ Seeds of Life program in the district last Thursday (19/7).

MAF-SoL’s activities in Covalima will support farmers to produce their own seed in the community so they have sufficient seed to plant and not have to rely on seed distribution from MAF.

Farmers enjoying the theatre performance in Lequidoe, Aileu

Farmers and communities around Aileu and Maubisse learned about improved techniques for maize production through theatre, dance and music earlier this month as part of a pilot trial of community theatre.

The pilot was run by Seeds of Life (SoL) in collaboration with Theatre of Timor-Leste, MAF and Charles Sturt University (CSU) and is the first time SoL has used theatre and music to share agricultural messages with farming families. (more…)
